Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software 2.0

"Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software allows organizations to deploy a secure, resilient, and available desktop environment because the desktop never leaves the datacenter. Users can access their centralized desktops from a wide range of supported client devices, including Windows PCs and Sun Ray virtual display clients. A variety of networks are supported, from LAN to WAN or the public Internet.

New in Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software 2.0 is the Sun Virtual Desktop Connector. This component provides a bridge between Sun Virtual Desktop Solutions access technologies (Sun Ray technology, Sun Secure Global Desktop Software, and Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software) and a virtualization back-end provided by VMware Infrastructure 3. It assists with the management and assignment of Microsoft Windows virtual desktop environments running on virtual machines to users of Sun Ray virtual display clients and other popular client devices." (from sun.com)

Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Software includes the following components:

   * Sun Virtual Desktop Connector 1.0
   * Sun Ray Software (Sun Ray Server Software 4.0, Sun Ray Connector for Windows OS 2.0,
and Sun Desktop Manager 1.0.1 [1])
   * Sun Secure Global Desktop Software 4.40.917

PC/SC-lite 1.0

PC/SC-lite 1.0 for Solaris 10 11/06 (SPARC or x86 Platform) is available to download from Sun's download area. The package enables the integrated Sun Ray Smart Card reader to be utilized as a PC/SC compliant reader when used with 3rd party middleware products. Personal Computer/Smart Card (PC/SC) is the standard framework for Smart Card device access on Windows, Linux and UNIX platforms. This distribution is a Sun Ray implementation of the PC/SC-lite API derived from the Open Source MUSCLE project. These packages require Sun Ray Server Software (SRSS) 4.0.

Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 Open Beta [2007-05-15]

The Sun Ray product team is pleased to announce the availability of Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 Beta for external use.

The Sun Ray product team encourages everyone to fill out a survey about their installation experience at:

Documentation is available from Sun's docs.sun.com site at:

and from the Sun Ray User Group web site at:

Key features to test

Features that simplify deployment

  • Integrated VPN client - Adopting Sun Ray clients outside of the corporate LAN previously required the use of an expensive hardware VPN device to secure the Sun Ray session. Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 introduces an integrated VPN/IPsec client directly in the Sun Ray device firmware that allows customers to simply plug their Sun Ray clients into nearly any network and connect back to their corporate network. This feature eliminates the need for a hardware VPN on the client side - as long as the user's organization has a compatible VPN infrastructure. Please note that the feature will only function on the latest generation of Sun Ray 2 class devices (Sun Ray 2, Sun Ray 2 FS and Sun Ray 270, as well as OEM models based on the same). The Sun Ray firmware has also been extended to support standard home networking configurations, for example, NAT-based private networks.
  • Client configuration - Sun Ray Software Update 2 introduces new firmware that creates a Pop-Up GUI which enables local configuration on all Sun Ray clients. This gives users a simple interface to edit and store settings related to their specific device and connection. Depending on the capabilities of the device, items such as the aforementioned VPN settings, static or DHCP networking, IP address, Sun Ray server list, etc., can be edited from the Pop-Up GUI.
  • Kiosk mode - Kiosk mode is now available for GNOME sessions on both Solaris and Linux. In addition, administrators now have much finer control of full screen desktop sessions for users. Kiosk policy is now configurable by desktop unit (DTU) or smart card and managed through an administrative user interface. A pre-configured Windows kiosk session is also included to simplify Windows kiosk mode deployment.

Security enhancements

  • Sun Ray Software now supports Solaris 10 Trusted Extensions, which greatly improves the security of the Sun Ray environment.

Microsoft interoperability

  • Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 adds Windows Vista support (RDP 5.2 only) and Solaris 10 Trusted Extensions support. Additionally, the connector has been tuned and is showing a dramatic performance improvement with screen updates over the previous release.

Accessibility and usability enhancements

  • Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 includes a brand new web administration interface. This interface provides a consistent look and feel for Sun software applications, allows for section 508 compliance, and provides feature parity with most existing command line tools.

Quality improvements

  • Quality improvements for Sun Desktop Manager (SDM)

Note: The final version of Sun Ray Software 4 Update 2 will also include support for external
USB smart card readers which will enable two person authentication.

Sun Virtual Desktop Access Kit for VMware, Version 1.0

"The Virtual Desktop Access Kit for VMware is the glue for linking a managed Virtual Desktop environment delivered through VMware VI 3 (VDI) and the Desktop Infrastructure components delivered by Sun, namely Sun Secure Global Desktop (SSGD) and Sun Ray Server Software (SRSS). The Access Kit manages the lifecycle of Windows XP or Windows 2000 based virtual machines, also called Virtual Desktops. This includes the Virtual Desktop creation, startup and shutdown (or suspension). The VDA Kit is also responsible for establishing the communication between desktop environment and access tier (SSGD + SRSS). This communication is based on Microsoft RDP supported both by SSGD and SRSS.

The Access Kit encompasses 3 components that are installed on the different layers of the architecture:

  • VDA Tools for VMware: They are installed on the Guest OS inside the VM and deliver a more robust handling of the RDP connection.
  • VDA Service for VMware: This is a Windows service installed on the server hosting Virtual Center 2.x. It provides the control logic for managing the VM lifecycle. This component utilizes the VMware VI SDK.
  • VDA Client for VMware: The VDA Client is installed on the Access Tier (SGD or SRSS). It contacts the VDA Service to locate a VM based on a given identifier, like for example a User ID.

Additionally the Access Kit for VMware delivers a couple of scripts that invoke the VDA Client. These scripts are responsible for establishing an RDP connection on behalf of SGD or SRSS."
